On June 14th I testified on behalf of Surfrider Foundation MA Chapter in support of the H.784/S.477 bills to reduce single use plastic pollution

This state bill would significantly curtail film plastic checkout bags statewide and establish a

minimum charge for all new checkout bags to actively incentivize bag reuse. It includes up-to-

date definitions to minimize loopholes from older laws and contains mechanisms to increase the

availability of reusable alternatives for those in need.

In addition to the obvious benefits in protecting wildlife and reducing marine debris, avoiding

unnecessary disposable items, especially those made from fossil fuel-derived plastics, is key to

achieving our urgently needed climate goals. Reducing waste in general also means less need for

landfill and incineration, which disproportionately harm low-income residents and communities

of color.
