With social distancing in place, many of us are experiencing a different relationship to the world. Our roles within the world have shifted – on the level of the personal and the collective. Our ability to interact with each other and the world around us have also shifted. The outside, a source of renewal and relaxation, stimulus and productivity, is now a restricted environment. Home, for many a source of comfort, may feel the opposite. On an abstract level, in the face of external uncertainty, we may dig deeper internally in order to rationalize or find meaning.
In this exhibit, I hope to explore the dualities of inside and outside – both concrete and abstract.
A note: In the week between creating the call for this exhibit, and reviewing the submitted artwork, my feelings about isolation versus the outside world changed dramatically. My view transitioned from a feeling of peace in being in nature, to a sense of the outside world as a dangerous, threatening place. While being inside means continued confinement and separation from the world and the people in it, the space inside the four walls of my home represents safety and security. ~ Erin Becker
